“Vidnova” Women’s Retreat: A Community-Based Approach to Domestic Violence Prevention

‍Ukrainian American House, in partnership with ethnic community-based organizations and with the support of CDSS, implemented the “Vidnova” (Renewal) gender‑specific activity as part of the Domestic Violence Prevention Program.

This intensive, retreat‑based approach served as a therapeutic intervention aimed at producing lasting relief from PTSD, depression, and anxiety by removing participants from high‑stress environments and providing focused healing. It was designed to support women from newcomer families in strengthening their emotional resilience, self‑worth, and personal stability—key factors in preventing vulnerability to unhealthy or abusive dynamics.

The “Vidnova” program is one important component of a broader collaboration aimed at supporting newcomer communities. Through the ongoing support of CDSS and our strong collaborative partnership, hundreds of Ukrainian families in the Sacramento area have received meaningful assistance as they adapt to life in the United States. Beyond domestic violence prevention, our joint efforts address essential needs such as healthcare access, housing navigation, education, employment, and settlement services, helping individuals and families build safe, stable, and self‑sufficient lives.

Within this retreat-based framework, participants engaged in a structured series of sessions, group discussions, and therapeutic activities focused on self-awareness, self-worth, emotional recovery, and confidence-building. The program combined educational and experiential components to create a safe, supportive environment that encouraged reflection, connection, and personal growth. The central theme of the retreat, “More Precious than Pearls,” emphasized the importance of recognizing one’s inherent value and building an internal foundation of independence and self‑respect. This approach aligns with evidence‑based prevention practices, as strengthening self‑worth and emotional awareness supports informed decision‑making and increased safety.

Participant feedback highlighted measurable outcomes, including improved emotional well‑being, increased self‑confidence, a stronger sense of personal boundaries, and enhanced awareness of healthy relationship dynamics. Programs such as “Vidnova” play a critical role in advancing the goals of the Domestic Violence Prevention Program by equipping participants with practical tools, emotional resources, and community support necessary for long‑term stability and well‑being.
