35 Years of Independence: United in Heritage, Service, and Support

On August 24, approximately 1,000 community members and guests gathered at the California State Capitol to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence. The event reflected a powerful spirit of unity, solidarity, and continued support for Ukraine and its people.
For Ukrainian American House, the celebration was—as always—more than a cultural gathering. It was an opportunity to meet Ukrainian families where they are, listen to their needs, and turn community connection into practical support. Our team provided trusted information about available services and resources, while UA House mentors and instructors created a dedicated children’s area with engaging activities for young guests.
By bringing people together around their shared heritage and cultural identity, the event strengthened relationships, deepened trust, and created new opportunities for continued support beyond the celebration itself. This is central to the UA House mission: helping Ukrainian families feel connected, informed, and supported as they build their lives in California.
The official program included congratulatory remarks from representatives of the Consulate General of Ukraine in San Francisco, a representative of California Governor Gavin Newsom, and Major General Matthew P. Beevers, The Adjutant General of the California Military Department. Community leaders and representatives of local organizations also joined the celebration.
Longtime friends of Ukraine also took part in the event. Former California Assemblymember Ken Cooley, who has supported Ukraine and the Ukrainian community in the Sacramento region for many years and regularly participates in community events, addressed the guests with words of solidarity. Congressman Kevin Kiley, who continues to advocate for Ukraine and the Ukrainian community at the federal level, also delivered remarks and congratulated attendees on this important anniversary. Both reaffirmed their continued support for Ukraine and its people.
A particularly meaningful part of the program honored the memory of Ukraine’s fallen defenders, as well as all those who continue to protect the country and uphold its independence today. Representatives of local churches then united in prayer for Ukraine, its people, and the restoration of a just and lasting peace.
Ukrainian culture was present throughout the event. Guests enjoyed musical and artistic performances, explored displays featuring Ukrainian traditions and cultural artifacts, and connected with community organizations serving Ukrainians in California.
Every event we organize or help bring to life serves a greater purpose: strengthening the Ukrainian community and ensuring that people can access the support they need. Through direct services, trusted information, referrals, children’s activities, and community partnerships, UA House continues turning moments of unity into meaningful and lasting impact.
We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who participated and helped make this celebration possible. Special thanks to our partners, including SDSS, UC San Diego, and Anthem Blue Cross, whose support allows UA House to continue fulfilling its mission and serving the Ukrainian community.
